AMPHIBIANS

 INJECTABLE ANESTHETICS
Ketamine 50 - 150 IM, IP, or dorsal lymph sac
Pentobarbital (Nembutal´) 6 mg/100 gm body weight Dorsal lymph sac, IV, IP, or intracoelomically
 INHALATION ANESTHETICS
Methoxyflurane (Metofane´)  No longer available.
Fluothane (Halothane ´) 1-3% Use to effect, as above.
Isoflurane (Aerrane´, Isoflo´) 1-5% Use to effect, as above.
 OTHERS
Tricaine methanesulfonate (MS 222´) 300-500mg/L H 2 O: larvae and newts

1-2 g/L: adult frogs, salamanders

 

up to 3 g/L: toads. Concentrations above 1 g/L should be buffered with sodium bicarbonate at 10-25 mEq/L;

 

induce 5-20 min., maintain by moist cloth contact with MS 222 solution; recover at 22-26°

for faster recoversy, MS 222 can be given at 13 mg/kg into dorsal lymph sac; must be a sterile soln.

Benzocaine ƒ 10-50 mg/L H 2 O: larvae
ƒ ƒ 300 mg/L for adult frogs and salamanders
NOT RECOMMENDED:
Thiopental (Pentothal´), Chloral hydrate, Urethane , 2-phenoxyethanol, Chlorobutanol, Quinidine, 4-styrlpyridine, Chlorpromazine (Thorazine´), Methylpentynol, Tertiary amyl alcohol.
