Required training

If you are involved in research, education, and production that involves live vertebrate animals, training is required.

Mandatory courses and workshops 

Additional hands-on training

Once you fulfill requirements, the Office of the Campus Veterinarian encourages you to enroll in additional training in animal care and use. Instruction is offered on a variety of topics, listed below.

All hands-on, in-person workshops are free of charge. Lab coats and gloves are provided.

Prerequisites

Prior to enrollment, you must complete the following required IACUC online training programs:

  • Principles of Animal Care (PAC)
  • Occupational Health Training – Animals (OHT-A)
  • Aseptic Surgical Technique online (AST-O)

Workshop offerings

The following workshops are offered by the Office of the Campus Veterinarian.

Anesthesia Machine Use and Maintenance
Anesthesia for Rodents
Aseptic Surgical Technique, Hands-On
The workshop includes training in aseptic techniques to minimize post-operative infections. Instrument sterilization, patient preparation, surgeon gloving and instrument handling will be demonstrated and practiced. Pre-, intra-, and post-operative patient care for best results will be demonstrated.

How to enroll

Contact the Office of the Campus Veterinarian at least one week in advance of one of the following scheduled workshop dates. Staff will respond to your email with location and specifics.
